This week’s activities present an opportunity for YOU to become the music maker remotely! In order to make music, we do not necessarily need Instruments...Our bodies can actually make lots of different music without the assistance of the four instrument families (Woodwinds, Brass, Strings, & Percussion).
Week 8 Task:
For the first part of this week’s lesson, I’d like you to watch the 3 minute video linked below from the World Science Festival. It showcases the most obvious way our bodies can make music: with our voices and vocal chords. In the video, musician Bobby McFerrin (Singer of “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”) using the Pentatonic Scale (A 5 note scale comprised of the black keys on the piano) to reveal one surprising result of the way our brains are wired!
As you watch, I encourage you to try to sing along…..OR better yet - See if your parents can!

For the second part of this week’s lesson, I’d like you try to make music in a less obvious way: Body Percussion! This will require you to use your hands, feet, arms, and legs to create rhythmic music. I have split this part of the activity into two sections. Feel free to attempt one or both! If you want to show off your skills, feel free to send along a video of your completed body percussion to me at [email protected]!

Alpha Four Body Percussion
Suggested for Grades 3-6 (Optional for R-1-2 as it is more complex) Click on the link below to view the body percussion video. Once you have the choreography all figured out, I encourage you to try to teach the choreography to someone else at home, maybe an older sibling, or an adult! http://www.viewpure.com/Mnt6O8N6eDg?start=0&end=0 See the video below where I complete the Alpha Four Challenge myself! _____________________________________________ |
Body Percussion Rain Storm
Suggested for Grades R – 1 – 2 (Optional for 3-6 as it is simpler) The body percussion Rain Storm will work best in a group – if you can gather up all of your family members to give this one a try, it will really help it to sound like a Rain Storm! You can follow along creating the rainstorm with the poster below or with this video: http://www.viewpure.com/hHKMgjMNhFI?start=0&end=0 _____________________________________________ |

Music is commonly used to help portray emotion in movies and shows. Musical Soundtracks help to real the audience's subconscious and create within them such emtions as joy, fear, anticipation, and sadness. I hope this week you enjoy exploring some famous, or not so famous, movie soundtracks!
A few famous composers you may enjoy listenin to are: John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Howard Shore, James Horner, or Michael Giacchino. I bet you'd be surprised how much of their music you already know from famous movies and tv shows like: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Titanic, Lost and The Incredibles!
